Low-cost IIoT on the steel shop floor: Charles Miers at the Computer Science Insights talks

We were pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Charles Christian Miers, Associate Professor at the Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina (UDESC), Brazil (LinkedIn), to the Computer Science Insights @HSG series of the School of Computer Science, in the Arena at SQUARE.

His talk, Using Low-cost IIoT Devices to Improve Industrial Facilities, looked at how Industrial IoT devices can automate the processes directly tied to production as well as the complementary processes that shape a company’s productivity and economy, and how IIoT fits into industrial processes alongside Industry 4.0 and other automation approaches. The centrepiece was a real deployment: IIoT devices in the production processes of ArcelorMittal Vega, a world leader in rolled steel, with the results identified across several deployed cases.

Charles received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (USP) and his Master’s in Computer Science from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). His research covers computer networks and information security, currently spanning cloud computing, blockchain, IIoT, device- and flow-centric authentication, adversarial AI, and energy efficiency, with industry partnerships including Hewlett Packard Enterprise, ArcelorMittal Vega, and Ericsson Research.

The visit also closed a personal loop: Charles advised Bruno’s Bachelor’s thesis, so this talk brought his very first research advisor to the group he now leads.
