Two papers, two awards at ACM IoT 2025 in Vienna

At the 15th ACM International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2025), held on 19 to 21 November 2025 in Vienna, the group’s work was recognized twice.

At the Workshop on Longevity in IoT Systems, From Noise to Knowledge: A Comparative Study of Acoustic Anomaly Detection Models in Pumped-storage Hydropower Plants (Karim Khamaisi, Nicolas Keller, Stefan Krummenacher, Valentin Huber, Bruno Rodrigues, with illwerke vkw) won the Best Paper Award. It takes on a genuinely hard, practical problem: hearing faults in hydropower machinery under real, highly noisy conditions, where clean training data is scarce. Read the preprint

In the main conference, Bridging Technical Capability and User Accessibility: Off-grid Civilian Emergency Communication (Karim Khamaisi, Oliver Kamer, Bruno Rodrigues, Jan von der Assen, Burkhard Stiller) was named a Best Paper Candidate, runner-up for the conference’s best-paper award. A collaboration with the Communication Systems Group (CSG) at the University of Zurich, it asks how off-grid emergency communication can be both technically capable and genuinely usable by civilians when the network goes down.
