BahnMining: David Kriesel at the SCS Student Conference

The School of Computer Science hosted David Kriesel in the Computer Science Insights @HSG talk series, this time collocated as the colloquium talk of the SCS Student Conference: Bahnmining - How to Setup Guerilla Data Projects.

The SCS Student Conference is our yearly event where the Bachelor and Master students in Computer Science (BCS and MCS) present their Bachelor Projects and Integrative Master Projects: a small conference with a keynote, parallel sessions, and an award ceremony.

Deutsche Bahn reports its delays as a single number, the percentage of trains running on time per month, a summary so radical that nothing interesting can be read from it. David took a closer look: his data set covers almost 25 million train stops, more than 50,000 per day. The talk walked through what this mass of data reveals, the dos and don’ts of corporate management with data, and how to set up a guerrilla data project so that it stays a surprise for its target audience. David is a computer scientist who studied in Bonn and at Cornell University and works as a data science director in industry; several of his talks have reached millions of views on YouTube.
