AI in industry: Wilhelm Kleiminger at the Computer Science Insights talks

Together with Simon Mayer, we hosted a talk in the Computer Science Insights @HSG series of the School of Computer Science: AI in Industry: Expectations, Realities, and the Role of Computer Scientists, by Wilhelm Kleiminger, Head of Data Science at Ergon Informatik AG.

AI is becoming part of everyday work in software and data engineering, and it raises new questions about tools, practices, and expectations. Wilhelm’s talk reflected on how AI is actually used in industry and what that means for computer scientists working in practice: evolving skill sets, the role of data and engineering, and the gap between prototypes and production systems. What the audience got was a grounded perspective on how modern AI methods are applied, where they fit into existing workflows, and where challenges remain. His title slide set the tone with a wink: “Computer Scientists” crossed out, “Software Engineers” written in its place.

Wilhelm has been with Ergon since 2016 and leads its Data Science team, combining machine learning with software engineering to build robust, production-ready systems, from forecasting and optimization to speech recognition, cloud architectures, and MLOps. Before moving fully into industry, he completed his PhD in Computer Science at ETH Zurich.
