Feeling the Room: A Practical Study on WiFi-based Occupancy Detection

Abstract
WiFi sensing offers a privacy-respecting alternative to cameras and wearable devices for indoor occupancy and localization, since every commodity WiFi chip already estimates the per-subcarrier Channel State Information (CSI) that summarizes how its packets have propagated through the environment. However, a decade of laboratory results has left it unclear how such systems behave on commodity hardware in realistic rooms when no labeled per-site training data is available.
